Audi & GridCars partner for ultra-fast charging across SA

The latest car brand to invest in the newest, ultra-fast EV charging technology for SA.

Audi South Africa is set to launch a full e-Tron model range in the next two months and to gear up for that, it has partnered with GridCars to install ultra-fast charging stations across Mzansi.

This will make Audi the first electric car brand to invest in such technology through publicly accessible sites.

The two entities have already started with the installation of the local charging investment project since December the previous year which includes: Four 150 kW (DC) ultra-fast charging stations are to be placed along major highways such as the N1, N2, N3 and N4.

These will enable fast charging of up to 340 km in just 30 minutes.

The lesser 80 kW (DC) fast-charging stations will also be implemented on the same highways with one of these set to close the gap between Johannesburg and Cape Town. The 80 kW chargers will add up to 185 km in 30 minutes.

A total of twenty-four 22 kW (AC) fast-charging stations will be installed at public lifestyle and recreational venues across SA as part of Audi’s destination charging station. These will add up to 100 km in an hour.

To further grow the public charging opportunities for all-electric car drivers, a total of 70 connectors will be available from the above charging stations.

“As we prepare for the arrival of our e-Tron range, we understand that there is more to be done as an automotive brand than simply providing the product, we also have to enable and partner with those who can empower the transition to an electric future with ease and understanding. Our public chargers are new, and incremental to the current EV charging network in South Africa,” explains Sascha Sauer, Managing Director of Audi South Africa.

The list of Audi e-Tron models to be made available through the brand’s ten e-Tron dealerships nationwide includes the e-Tron 55 SUV, e-Tron 55 Sportback, e-Tron S Sportback, e-Tron GT and RS e-Tron GT.
