BMW has released pricing for its M5
The BMW M5 is a masterpiece of engineering, and somehow BMW managed to create a large sedan capable of supercar performance. Unsurprisingly, the announcement of BMW's new M5 iteration as a plug-in hybrid sparked some concern. Fortunately, unlike the modern car trend, BMW has managed to provide a highly competitive price for the M5, which will likely give some of its competitors cause for concern.
The new M5 retains the speed and excitement of the previous generation. It produces 535kW and 1,000Nm thanks to its two M TwinScroll turbochargers and plug-in hybrid V8. To break down this power output, its ICE motor produces 430kW and 750Nm, and its hybrid system produces the remaining 145kW and 280Nm at its maximum output. The M xDrive AWD system precisely distributes this power through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. What this allows for is a 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 305km/h.
Due to its hybrid nature, the M5 also boasts a consumption of 1.7l/100km on a full charge, making this beast capable of tackling the daily hustle and bustle with ease while retaining its ability to dominate the highway.
As you have probably heard, this new M5 has been in the spotlight due to its weight. It comes in around the 2.5-tonne mark, which is heavy for a performance car, but BMW has assured its customers that it still offers insanely impressive performance in both a straight line and in the corners.
However, the big news for the M5 is its price, which comes in at R2,690,000, and we were expecting it to breach the R3 million mark. What this means is that the M5 will be only R400k more than the M3 and only R170k more than Merc-AMG's C63S. These figures are surprising, and given the popularity of the M5 and its price point, they are certainly causing the Affalterbach pricing strategists some sleepless nights.
Upon hearing that the M5 will weigh 2.5 tonnes, I know a few of you might have lost interest, but the pricing definitely brings quite a few points back for the new M5. It's due to be unveiled at Kyalami M Fest later this year.
