BMW Likes its New Look. No Turning Back.

BMW's bold new designs have been getting a lot of mixed reviews, but it looks like it's here to stay.

The past year has been interesting for the design team at BMW. The cars they have released are unique in style; from what we are hearing, they love the controversial spotlight.

Starting with the massive grilles in their current M3 and M4 to the odd box shape of the M2 and the futuristic appeal from the XM that's taking a step in a particular direction with their vehicle aesthetic.

BMW has made it clear that the new generation of vehicle designs is not an experiment or mistake, for that matter, but rather an active attempt to look into the future and start building towards what the brand will be in 10 years.

The BMW design team says they are always looking for something new. And adding "new elements" to their cars is a way of keeping designs fresh and innovative. This explains why we have recently seen such a change in BMW's appearance. The 7 Series is an example of this design movement, as it has a massive and oddly-shaped grille with LEDs, and although their appearance might be offputting at first, the designs are undoubtedly striking. Isn't that the whole point?

One of the main reasons for this change is that BMW wants to shift their design to accommodate a wider audience. Traditionally, BMW has been the brand to go for if you want an exciting yet aggressive drive. Although their luxury car options, such as the X7 and 7 Series, have been overshadowed by their focus on performance, the stigma surrounding their car exteriors persists. It makes sense for the brand to highlight its less showed models in a new light.

Adrian Van Hooyadonk, Director of BMW Design, recently said this in an interview with our TopGear UK counterparts: "I think in the future what is going to be important is our design will be cleaner. We will design the grille according to the proportion of the overall vehicle or according to the expression that we want to give it."

Despite facing scrutiny in recent years, BMW remains committed to its unique front grille design as they believe it is ahead of its time. It's fascinating to see their dedication to this feature.

I might get some hate for this, but I like this new design change from BMW. From the G80 M3 grill to the M2 body, even the massive front end of the 7 Series. You can see that an effort has been put into making each of their models unique and stand out from competitors. I hope that BMW continues with their confident push for futuristic vehicles, but there is a fine line to overdoing it.
