The veil has finally been pulled back off the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible that is earmarked for SA’s introduction in the fourth quarter of 2021.
The BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive becomes the third variant to join the M4 stable with its new soft top that is claimed to be 40% lighter than the outgoing model’s metal rooftop.
The soft top can be opened or closed in just 18 seconds. The boot space has been enlarged by 80-litres over the predecessor.
Under the hood, the BMW M4 Competition Convertible houses the same S58 twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline-six engine that powers the range. The engine is good for 375 kW and 650 Nm of torque. All that amount of grunt is accessed via an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission that sends power to both axles via the M xDrive system.
The new BMW M4 Competition Convertible accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds en route to a top speed of 250 km/h or 280 km/h with the M driver’s package.
For reference sake, the M4 Coupe only requires 3.5 seconds to complete the 0-100km/h sprint.
It features three shift programs as well as an Active M Differential for better traction. The three modes are 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD.
Buyers can choose the optional M Drive Professional that adds M Traction Control with ten-stage adjustment of wheel slip limitation, M Drift Analyser and M Laptimer.
The exterior is bolstered with M specific details such as a large, vertical BMW kidney grille in M-specific design, large cooling air intakes for engine and brakes, powerfully contoured wheel arches, and distinctive M Side Gills.
The rear is fitted with two pairs of tailpipes integrated into an M-specific diffuser. M Carbon exterior package and BMW M Performance Parts are available as options.
Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Servotronic steering with variable ratio are offered as standard as well as M Compound brakes as standard. The M Carbon ceramic brakes can be had at an additional fee.
The M4 Competition Convertible rides on forged M light-alloy wheels that measure 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear as standard.
The interior comes fitted with newly developed M Sport seats and Extended Merino leather trim as standard while seat ventilation is offered as an option as well as M Carbon bucket seats in structure-based design.
At this stage, pricing is yet to confirmed, but expect it to command a premium over the M4 Competition Coupe's base price of R1 959 182.
