Brabus Classic rekindles iconic Mercedes-Benz SL 300 Gullwing
Brabus Classic, the dealer and restorer of older Mercedes-Benz cars has given the 300 SL Gullwing car a fresh start.
Bearing the same ‘El - DR 1’ license plate, this is the one and only car that American artist Andy Warhol selected to merge the world of revolutionary pop art and automotive history.
As for the interior, Brabus Classic doesn’t go into specifics detailing what it has done to it, however, as a broad overview, the refurbished 300 SL Gullwing gets leather and fabric material as well as chrome accent elements. The restorer goes on to say that these continue to impress with the same immaculate quality as they did in 1955.
Its motivation still comes from the legendary 3.0-litre straight-six engine that delivers 160 kW. Brabus Classic says that every single bolt and component of the 300 SL’s engine configuration has been restored in accordance with all original specifications and with unmatched precision. It was in 1986 when Daimler-Benz commissioned Andy Warhol to make a series of original artworks to tell the story of the automobile and that’s how the ‘Cars’ series came to materialise.
A Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwinig with the chassis number 198.040-5500629 and license plate ‘El - DR 1’ was pictured in large format on pages 94 and 95 of the book ‘Frank Oleski. Series Sports Cars from 1945 - 1980’.
