Brembo will Supply Braking Tech at 24 Hours of Le Mans

Brembo is a name that resonates with car enthusiasts and racers alike. The Italian firm has been at the forefront of crafting cutting-edge braking systems for the world's most prestigious carmakers for six decades. Its expertise also extends to the motorsport fold, where it supplies Brembo brakes to the elite teams of MotoGP, Formula One and Formula E, to name a few.

Now, Brembo is ready to make history as an official partner and braking technology provider at the 24 Hours of Le Mans' 100th-anniversary edition.

The highly-regarded endurance racing event is considered the world's oldest, and it's set to enter its 100th instalment this year held on the Circuit de la Sarthe from June 10-11 when 62 cars compete across four different classes in the race.

Back to Brembo, though, and the company says it has been able to tailor its braking system to suit the requirements of each team, driver and vehicle. Taking part in the racing event will allow Brembo to find the most practical combination of lightness and rigidity for enhanced reliability. That said, Brembo promises that if used optimally, its brakes will last for the entire race duration as the rate of wear and tear would have been reduced.

Brembo technicians have also optimised the size and ventilation of the discs fitted to the hypercars, which have a maximum thickness of 38 mm and a maximum diameter of 380 mm. These attributes make them suitable for more than 6,000 km of braking, thanks to 432 ventilation holes allowing the discs to work in temperatures between 250 and 850 degrees Celcius.

Regarding the Le Mans Prototype class, the carbon discs are 32 mm thick with a diameter of 380 mm and, like those in the hypercars, are effective for up to 6,000 kilometres. They have 48 ventilation holes but with a working temperature range that matches that of the hypercars.

The Le Mans GT Endurance cars are a little different and come fitted with smooth cast-iron discs with no holes but with as many as 72 fins. These measure 35 mm in thickness and 390 mm in diameter. These are good for up to 4,000 km with a working temperature between 250 and 750 degrees.

Brembo's braking technology will grace 44 of the 62 racing machines, each equipped with at least one Brembo component such as discs, callipers or pads.

For Brembo's CEO Daniele Schillaci, the participation is more than just a showcase. It is also a laboratory where the company can experiment and refine new designs and solutions that can later be applied to road cars.
