Facelifted BMW 2 Series Coupé: Sometimes less is more

No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. This is the facelifted BMW 2 Series Coupé that is slated to join the local range in the fourth quarter of the year, following its local introduction roughly two years ago.

Now, you might be thinking that the 2 Series Coupé still looks as fresh as a daisy, so why the facelift? Well, in the world of automotive development, there’s always room for marginal improvements.

Many will agree that the 2 Series Coupé isn’t in dire need of a facelift as it still looks fresh in the respective stable, but here it is.

While changes on the outside appear to be subtle, and you need to be a die-hard fan of the product to spot the differences, BMW says the new 2 Series Coupé comes with new colour options, including the Vegas Red shade and Zandvoort Blue for the M240i xDrive. Only the current M2 Competition features this same colour.

Also, it comes with what BMW calls an optional "M Sport Professional" package, which adds blacked-out trim and an additional spoiler.

Like before, the M2 will continue to ride on a set of standard 19-inch M light-alloy wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the back, all in double-spoke design with a Jet Black finish. However, BMW has added M light-alloy wheels finished in silver as an option. If you specify the optional M Race Track package, you can combine these with track tyres for those exciting track days.

Looking at the interior, the BMW Curved Display, which consists of a 12.3-inch information display with the brand’s OS 8.5 and a 14.9-inch control display, has finally found its way into the 2 Series. The latter forms a gateway to functions such as climate control, temperature and ventilation settings, seat heating, and steering wheel heating, as the brand focuses more on digitisation.

The instrument panel has been redesigned, courtesy of new adjustment controls for the air vent grilles in the centre of the instrument panel and on the driver’s and front passenger sides of the cockpit.

Inside the M2, the interior trim elements on the instrument panel and centre console come as standard in a dark graphite matte finish. Buyers will be able to customise the interior with the optional Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite, M Carbon Fibre, or new fine-brushed aluminium finish.

The current coupe range will soldier on as it is, except for the M2 Competition, which gets more grunt compared to its precursor.

As a refresher, the Coupé range consists of the 220i, 220d, M240i xDrive, and M2 Competition. The highlight of the range, the M2 Competition, gets a power bump from 338kW/550Nm to 353kW and 600Nm from the same 3.0-litre inline-six twin-turbo petrol engine.

While the refresh of the BMW 2 Series Coupé range may appear subtle on the surface, it signifies a commitment to continuous improvement and refinement of the entire lineup. After all, there’s more to a car than just its looks.
