First Drive: Toyota Hilux Raider 2.8 GD-6 48V

 

We are a bakkie-nut nation with specific tastes and traditions. In the past, vehicles like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger were the go-to workhorse solutions with reliable, bulletproof engines and a rugged chassis setup. The announcement of a hybrid Hilux raised some eyebrows, but after spending some time behind the wheel of the updated Raider with the Hybrid 48V system, we concluded that it may well be a great option for the lifestyle bakkie fan. 

This new hybrid product from Toyota has put the customer first and retained all the things we love about the 2.8-litre with a little electric kick. It comes standard with the 2.8-litre turbodiesel bolted to an automatic 6-speed transmission. This trusty four-pot produces 150kW and 500Nm from combustion alone, and the hybrid system adds a further 12kW and 65Nm once fully charged. 

 

The main use of this hybrid system is to increase efficiency by an estimated 7–11%. It is an intelligent system that assists your driving behaviour at any speed and allows for better acceleration and torque from a standstill. There is a decent amount of power in the 2.8 GD-6 48V to tackle both highways and off-road obstacles. I did notice that the rear suspension remained stiff—a common trait in bakkies due to the lack of cargo—and noticeably choppier than other competitors. 

 

A few issues that have been brought up before the 48V was released are the new hybrid system's dependability and additional cost. Fortunately, the battery unit is small, at only 13 cells with a weight of 7.6kg. The drive does not feel electrified, but the torque at low speed is impressive, while the system quietly works behind the scenes to reduce your fuel consumption. Unfortunately, this puts the Raider on the pricey side. 

On the inside, the Raider remains rather dated, with heavy use of plastic and an older infotainment system. There is speculation that the new Hilux may arrive next year, which we hope will further improve the cabin experience.

Water tightness is a concern for electrified off-road vehicles, but the 48V allows a wading depth of 700mm, and in case of submersion or a hybrid system failure after years of service, the bakkie will continue to function as a conventional 2.8-litre GD-6 Hilux. Due to the small size of the battery, it will also be a lot less costly to replace compared to conventional mild-hybrid offerings. This hybrid system will work its way into other vehicles like the Fortuner and will provide owners with a more frugal and city-friendly option to the traditional workhorse bakkie and offroad machine.


Another topic of discussion is the refreshed Raider lineup. It's the most popular Hilux and now has a new honeycomb-style front grill, a redesigned front bumper, new honeycomb lamp bezels, black door handles and mirrors, a black rear bumper, and a black tailgate handle. The new look is subtle but gives it a more dynamic and aggressive presence on the road. 

Accessorising new cars can come with a selection of warranty issues. Fear not, though, as Toyota has teamed up with various local 4x4 accessory providers, like 4x4 Mega Store, to offer around 300 additions to your bakkie; these include canopies, roof tents, traction boards, and many others. Unfortunately, Toyota hasn’t included any performance modifications to their supply list due to safety concerns with components like suspension lift kits and power additions, but this is a topic Toyota SA is looking into. 


The 48V's development is impressive, and Toyota's integration of the multi-pathway system into its products demonstrates its understanding of consumer concerns. The hybrid is a fantastic, stress-free, and relatively well-priced option if you do use your Hilux for daily commutes. It provides a good power addition and works behind the scenes to save you fuel.
