Ford Mustang GT3 Racer Revealed at Le Mans Ahead of 2024 Premiere
The Ford Motor Company has always held the 24 Hours of Le Mans in high regard since it joined the race in 1964 with the Ford GT40, and since then, the American carmaker has claimed a total of six class wins, with the most recent one in 2019 with the Ford GT Mk II.
For the 2024 Le Mans endurance race, Ford has announced that its new Mustang GT3 race car will take on the challenge. Based on the new Mustang Dark Horse, the racer was unveiled at the centenary celebration on the eve of this year’s Le Mans race wearing a fresh new racing livery that will be worn by future racing cars under the Ford Performance banner.
The Mustang GT3 will go head-to-head with the Aston Martin Vantage, Chevrolet Corvette, and Porsche 911.
Developed in partnership with motorsport experts, Multimatic and M-Sport, the Mustang GT3 will use the Coyote 5.4-litre V8 engine.
In case you are wondering, the Multimatic company is the same entity that built the Le Mans-winning GT, while M-Sport has always worked closely with Ford in rally competitions and will be tasked with building the Mustang GT3’s bespoke engine.
The Mustang features an unequal-length double-wishbone suspension at the front and rear axle to make it race-ready. There is a rear-mounted transaxle gearbox, and the use of carbon fibre body panels and an aero package ensures that the race car meets stringent GT3 targets.
The Mustang GT3 is a dazzling comeback for Ford in the sportscar arena after the superb run of the GT that claimed four Le Mans titles from 2016 to 2019. The new challenger promises to unleash its power and speed against its rivals in 2024.
