Ford Ranger Tremor officially confirmed for SA
The Ford Ranger's special edition models have always stood out from the crowd. With catchy names like Thunder, Stormtrak, XL Sport Pack, and FX4, the previous Ranger models have captured the hearts and signatures of South African bakkie lovers, consistently pushing the Ranger to rank among some of the best-selling vehicles on the sales charts.
For the current Ranger models, Ford is introducing the Tremor variant, which is based on the value-for-money XLT version and comes fitted with a host of impressive features.
The Ford Ranger Tremor has a distinctive look, with a black off-road honeycomb grille, LED extra lights from the Wildtrak X, custom-made grey accents on the front bumper and H-bar, vents on the fenders, and black details on the mirrors, doors, and rear bumper.
The wheel arch mouldings have been extended and painted in the same bolder grey colour. These are home to 265/70 all-terrain General Grabber AT3 tyres mounted on 17-inch Asphalt Black machine-faced alloy rims like in the Wildtrak X. The Ranger Tremor also comes fitted with a ‘Tremor’ badge on the rear tailgate, bold ‘Tremor’ decals on the loadbox sides, and a black Ford oval on the front grille and tailgate.
For off-road trek duties, the Tremor is equipped with a steel bash plate, steel underbody protection for the engine, a transfer case, two front tow hooks, cast aluminium side steps, and a long-leg tubular sports bar.
For better off-road prowess, the Tremor gets the same suspension as the Wildtrak X. For reference, Bilstein Position-Sensitive Dampers developed the system, which resulted in a 24mm increase in ground clearance and a 30mm wider track.
When it finally goes on sale, buyers will be able to order it in Conquer Grey, Agate Black, Carbonised Grey, Frozen White, Lucid Red, Blue Lightning, and Iconic Silver.
Inside, the Ranger Tremor comes fitted with water-resistant black vinyl with Medium Dark Urban Grey stitching, and the front seats boast the Tremor logo embroidered in orange on the seatbacks and provide six-way adjustment. It also comes with vinyl flooring in place of traditional carpets, which should be relatively easy to clean.
The 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system from the XLT has been updated with a larger 12-inch unit that features a 360-degree camera system, wireless smartphone charging pad, off-road SYNC screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Like most current Ranger models, the Tremor comes with a spray-in bedliner, an integrated 12-volt socket, a versatile cargo management system, and roof-mounted auxiliary switches.
The Tremor is powered by a 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine with 154kW and 500Nm of torque. In the Wildtrak X’s application, the unit provides more than enough grunt for tackling obstacles. Ford's now-familiar 10-speed automatic transmission sends these numbers to the wheels.
It comes with the brand’s full-time 4WD system, which makes use of an electromagnetic transfer case.
On the safety side, the Tremor features an extensive range of driver assistance systems such as Trail Turn Assist, Trail Control, Hill Descent Control, Hill Launch Assist, Dynamic Stability Control, Lane Keeping System with Road Edge Detection, Pre-Collision Assist, Reverse Brake Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring with Trailer Coverage, and parking sensors front and rear, as well as a total of seven airbags as standard.
The Ford Ranger Tremor is a bakkie that combines style, performance, and value in one exciting package, and looking at what it brings to the segment, it should make a lasting impression.
Ford says the Ranger Tremor will launch in 2024, and its pricing will be announced closer to the bakkie’s launch. When it goes on sale, it will come standard with a 4-year or 120,000km warranty, 4-year or unlimited-distance Roadside Assistance, and a 5-year or unlimited-distance corrosion warranty.
Buyers have the option to purchase service or maintenance plans for up to eight years, or 135,000km.
