McLaren W1’s hybrid V8 to power future models

In the realm of hypercars, the McLaren W1 looks all set to push the limits once again, following in the tyre tracks of its legendary predecessors, the F1 and P1 hypercars of yesteryears.

Looking at what it brings to the fold, it’s really an engineering marvel. Think rear-wheel-drive, F1-inspired technology, lightweight engineering, advanced aerodynamics, and a performance hybrid system, all of which create something truly special. And if the early impressions are anything to go by, this car is set to be nothing short of stunning.

TGSA had the privilege of joining McLaren for a virtual powertrain workshop, where masterminds behind the W1 shared exclusive insights into what makes it so special.

Speaking at the workshop, the brand’s Head of Communications, Piers Scott, said the hybridised 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that powers the W1 will be used in the brand’s future series production products, most notably the successor to the 750S, which will likely debut sometime in 2028.

Regarding the W1’s all-new engine, codenamed MHP-8, it's pretty clear that engineers have worked tirelessly to make it as incredibly potent and capable as possible. Unlike previous McLaren engines, which Ricardo supplied, this one has been built from the ground up by McLaren Automotive. The development began in late 2020, with the first prototype ready in late 2022, and it has undergone rigorous physical testing over the last three and a half years.

The figures clearly demonstrate the team's goal of creating a hypercar that can dominate the track while still being practical for daily driving. The engine, plus its hybrid system, makes 938kW and produces rotational force in the realm of an earth-shaking 1,340Nm to the rear axle. The W1 rockets from 0-100km/h in just 2.7 seconds, hits 200km/h in 5.8 seconds, and blasts past 300km/h in 12.7 seconds before topping out at 350km/h while shifting through an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The hybrid system is powered by a smaller 1.3kWh battery, which has less energy density than the P1’s 4.7kWh unit. That, unfortunately, has resulted in a limited EV range of just 2km, compared to the P1’s 11km. However, the brand says it isn’t worried, nor are the hypercar owners. Instead of chasing range, the system has been engineered to prioritise performance.

McLaren also asserts that the new powertrain has the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class. With a redline of 9,200r/min, it’s an absolute screamer, yet it weighs 10kg less than previous V8s while it's stronger and more capable of handling extreme performance demands.

Instead of chasing outright top speed, McLaren says its focus with the W1 is pure driver engagement. That’s why, we were told, the brand opted for rear-wheel drive rather than all-wheel drive, which would have added weight and compromised steering feel. The result? A more connected driving experience—and, of course, plenty of tail-happy joys. Not just that, Richard Jackson, chief engineer for the powertrain department, said that the team has worked on the intake and exhaust to make sure it sounds brutal for better driver engagement. “We worked on building the sound and vibration to a crescendo towards the rev limit, really enabling the driver to chase that red line," he said.

While all 399 units of the McLaren W1 have already been claimed, the car offers a glimpse into the brand’s future and what we can expect in the years to come. And looking at it, it’s easy to see why excitement is through the roof. Oh, and in case you were wondering, each of the 399 buyers had to part with around R46 million for the privilege of owning one.
