Mercedes-AMG GT 43: A rear-wheel drive configuration for the third-in-command

Before delving into the primary topic of discussion, it is important to acknowledge that Mercedes-AMG’s robust V8 engine continues to feature in the GT sports car, even as electrification becomes increasingly prevalent within the brand's portfolio.

The GT 43, a new AMG GT model, is now available for purchase. As the name suggests, it features the same electrified M139 2.0-litre inline-4 engine found in other AMG products like the SL 43 and A45 S models.

As in the A45 S, the powerplant pumps 310kW and 500Nm. There is no 4Matic+ treatment here; all that power is delivered to the rear axle for some sideways thrills via a 9-speed AMG automatic transmission.

Fancy an AWD variant? Well, the GT 55 and GT 63, with their thumping V8s, come standard with the 4Matic+ system for that extra grip. Despite sending all its power to the rear axle, the GT 43 remains a formidable machine. It darts from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds, and it will continue to sprint until it reaches a maximum speed of 280km/h.

In the looks department, the new Mercedes-AMG GT 43 looks like its more potent counterparts, for the most part, and as far as aerodynamics are concerned, it comes fitted with an active air control system airpanel and an extendable rear spoiler. It sits on a set of standard 19-inch light-alloy wheels, but these can be upgraded to 20-inch or 21-inch wheels at an added cost.

The interior shares a similar aesthetic with the GT 55 and GT 63 variants. As a refresher, you get the likes of a 11.9-inch multimedia touchscreen, electrically and manually adjustable AMG sports seats in Nappa leather (AMG Performance seats can be had as options), standard high-gloss black treatment, and aluminium, chrome black, or carbon decorative elements are also available.

At this stage, Merc South Africa hasn’t said anything regarding the arrival of the trio to the local market, but it will likely arrive before the end of the year or early 2025.

The introduction of the ‘43’ to the range signifies a strategic move by Mercedes-AMG to broaden its customer base, and the new deputy is expected to surpass the popularity of its forebear.
