Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance F1 Edition breaks cover
Forget the complicated name, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance debuted a few months ago as the most powerful AMG in the history books of the company from Affalterbach.
Already, Mercedes-AMG is adding further appeal to the GT with the introduction of the special GT 63 S E Performance F1 Edition model, thanks to the technology transfer from Formula One just in case you may be asking yourself how F1 gets involved here.
Even with that, the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance F1 Edition debut coincides with the celebration of 55 years of AMG where it joins the likes of the CLA 35/45 and G 63 Edition 55 variants.
When base-AMG isn’t enough
At a glance, the special model is distinguished by a combination of the paintwork in non-metallic Manufaktur alpine grey, red colour accents, 21” AMG forged alloy wheels in five-twin-spoke design, black matt finish with red rim flange just like the Official FIA F1 Medical Car from AMG.
An AMG Aerodynamics package has been thrown into the mix for better lift force and reduced drag. The package adds a fixed rear aerofoil in high-gloss black, an optimised diffuser in the rear apron, a larger front splitter plus additional air-deflector elements on the air intakes and the front wheel arches.
There are also deflector elements on the side air outlets of the rear wings.
The special Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance F1 Edition also comes with an AMG Night Package Exterior and the AMG Night Package II which add a gloss-black front splitter, trim elements in the front wings, and exterior mirror housings, side edge trim and window surrounds.
Other bits and pieces such as the trim strip in the rear apron, and twin tailpipe trims of the AMG exhaust system are in black chrome and heat-insulating dark-tinted glass.
The interior is bolstered with a contrast of black and red, AMG Performance seats with Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery in black with red decorative stitching, red seat belts, AMG performance steering wheel in Nappa leather / Dinamica microfibre with red decorative stitching and the AMG door sill trims with red illuminated ‘AMG’ lettering.
The beating heart
At its heart still beats a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine supplemented by a rear axle-mounted electric motor plus a 6.1 kWh battery pack that’s good for 620 kW and 1,400 Nm of torque. The AMG GT 63 S E Performance dashes from a standstill to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds before maxing out at a top speed of 316 km/h.
An AMG Speedshift MCT-9G transmission shoves power to both axles via the brand’s 4Matic+ system.
