Before the untimely passing of polymath artist, architect, creative director, fashion designer and philanthropist, Virgil Abloh in November 2021, Mercedes-Maybach had finalised the Project Maybach which was then revealed in December of the same year.
The final chapter in the form of the limited-edition Maybach by Virgil Abloh has now broken cover and it is based on the 2023 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S 680.
Designed in partnership with Mercedes-Benz Group AG Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener, the limited-edition model features a bespoke two-tone colour combination with the upper part of it in glossy Obsidian Black while the lower part side flanks and special forged rims get the sand shade.
It’s the interior that has the highest levels of craftsmanship in the form of a two-tone colour scheme. Interior components such as doors, lower dashboard, steering wheel, four-seat configuration and headliner are finished in black and sand-coloured Nappa leather while the trims and strips get the sand hue.
The mats of the limited-edition Maybach by Virgil Abloh get black and sand-coloured border and embroidered Mercedes-Maybach insignia.
The window frames are painted to better the vehicle’s monolithic appearance and the Mercedes-Maybach and Virgil Abloh logos are printed on the Piano Black middle of the centre console, rear cushions, headrests and door sill panel.
The interior further features a personalised user interface equipped with the more luxurious variation of the Maybach MBUX systems. According to Mercedes-Maybach, there are handpicked visual elements that are used to enrich the digital content: from a home button with a coloured border and brand logo denoting the limited edition, to profile pictures decorated with luxurious fashion accessories.
Its power comes courtesy of a 6.0-litre V12 engine that spews out 450 kW, enough to catapult the saloon to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds before hitting the top speed at 250 km/h.
There isn’t any pricing information but what we know is that only 39 units will be built exclusively for the U.S market where Abloh was born and later died. Buyers of the limited-edition Maybach by Virgil Abloh will each receive a special custom-made wooden box covered in sand-coloured Nappa Leather emblazoned with the Mercedes-Maybach and Virgil Abloh logo as well as a special car cover.
The gift box contains a 1/18 scale replica of the limited-edition car, the two-car keys and a carabiner hook.
The late Virgil Abloh’s collaboration with Mercedes–Maybach culminates in the launch of a limited-edition bespoke Maybach S-Class and capsule collection, inspired by Project Maybach.
