New BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe debuts
Though not the most popular model in BMW’s history books following its initial introduction in 2020, the BMW 2 Series is without doubt a good car that appeals to those who prioritise the practicality of a 4-door sedan with the sleek aesthetics of its coupe design.
It’s now entering its second generation for the 2025 model year and comes with an updated exterior design, tweaked interior setup, and revised powertrains.
Visually, it’s still a Gran Coupe, a design that we are accustomed to but features redesigned front and rear ends. If you look closely, you'll see that it adopts the same maturity strategy as the most recent 1 Series and the X2 crossover SUV.
In terms of size, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe’s length and height have been stretched by 20mm to 4,546mm and 25mm to 1,445mm. The width and wheelbase have been retained at 1,800mm and 2,670mm, respectively.
Like most recent BMWs, the 2 Series Gran Coupe now gets a combination of a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which makes use of the latest iDrive 9 software.
In terms of engine offerings, BMW will offer four options: 218d, 220, 220d, and M235. Starting with the oil burners, the 218d packs a 2.0-litre turbodiesel 4-cylinder engine with 110kW and 360Nm of torque, while the 220d uses the same engine but with increased power outputs of 120kW and 400Nm.
The 220, on the other hand, uses a smaller 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that churns out 125kW and 280Nm. The formidable M235 upgrades to a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo-petrol unit that gushes out 221kW and 400Nm plus an xDrive system that sends power to all-fours for better handling. And performance? It’s no slouch. It accelerates to 100km/h in an Audi S3 sedan-threatening time of 4.9 seconds.
We are thrilled to see the 2 Series Gran Coupe make a comeback, recognising its strong market potential. Although BMW SA has yet to confirm the local range, this model is expected to resonate both emotionally and logically with consumers. The M235 variant, in particular, adds an extra layer of excitement to the lineup.
