Porsche 911 Dakar now available with historic racing liveries
Before the end of 2022, Porsche stunned the public when it revealed its go-anywhere limited-run 911 Dakar model, which rivals the Lamborghini Sterrato.
With only 2,500 units of the 911 Dakar to be made globally, Porsche has now released historic decorative wraps for the model, which pay homage to the Rally entrants of 1971, 1974, and 1978 in the East African Safari Rally.
First in line is the Rallye 1971 decal set that adds the competition number 19 worn by the 911 that finished fifth in 1971, driven by Sobieslaw Zasada and Marian Bien.
The second wrap is the Rallye 1974 Björn Waldegård which equips the 911 Dakar with narrower stripes augmented by the Porsche logo on the lower edges of the doors. The theme nods to the iconic racing 911 Carrera 2.7 RS driven by Swedish rally champion Björn Waldegård alongside co-driver Hans Thorszelius.
Porsche has reinterpreted the historic decals of the two 1978 911 SC Group 4 cars that wore the sponsor’s decals, consisting of wave-shaped surfaces in orange and light and dark grey. The new 911 Dakar can now be had with the decals with the competition number 14 embossed on the doors. The number represents the vehicle that finished second at the East African Safari Rally with South African duo Vic Preston Jr. and John Lyall at the helm.
The decals can be ordered via the brand’s Exclusive Manufaktur arm, while the Rallye 1971 and Rallye 1974 can be ordered via Porsche Tequipment at Porsche Centres.
As a reminder, the Porsche 911 Dakar is powered by a 3.0-litre bi-turbo 6-cylinder engine that delivers 353 kW and 570 Nm. It sprints from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds before maxing out at 240 km/h while shuffling through an 8-speed PDK.
Its off-road credentials come from the 50 mm ground clearance, a set of specially-developed Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus Tyres, and a front and rear end that can be further raised by 30 mm using the standard lift system.
