Porsche expands 911 range with the Carrera S
Many will agree that 2024 was quite an eventful year for Porsche. Among these interesting products was the introduction of the Carrera GTS T-Hybrid, which marked the first time that a 911 got a hybrid system.
Seeing the word ‘hybrid’ associated with an iconic nameplate such as 911 may feel unconventional, but this system arguably makes it the most practical and refined daily-driving 911 to date.
On the other side, Porsche is bridging the gap between the 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid with the introduction of the Carrera S, which is available in coupe and cabriolet variants. To start with, it features an upgraded 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder boxer engine with 353kW and 530Nm—22kW more than its predecessor.
Porsche claims that the Carrera S delivers the same level of performance that was previously only available in the 911 Carrera GTS. That said, it blisters off the mark to 100km/h in 3.3 seconds before hitting its top speed at 308km/h while shuffling through an 8-speed PDK transmission that drives the rear wheels. For comparison, the 911 GTS T-Hybrid it slots under completes the same sprint in 3.0 seconds en route to a top speed of 312km/h.
In terms of standard equipment, the Carrera S comes fitted with 21-inch wheels, a sports exhaust system with tailpipes painted in silver, and the brand’s PTV+ (Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus), which isn’t available in the Carrera. Other standard equipment includes red brake callipers and discs that measure 408mm at the front and 380mm at the back for optimum braking performance. For those seeking even better capability, upgrades like carbon-ceramic brakes and a sports suspension that lowers the ride height by 10mm are available upon request.
As for the interior, the Carrera S comes standard with a leather package in black, while the seat, headrests, dashboard, door panels, and the optional rear seat system in the coupe are trimmed with smooth-finish leather. As in other Carrera models, folding rear seats are available at no extra cost, offering flexibility to the standard two-seat configuration.
Porsche has added the option of using more extensive leather on large areas such as the glove box lid, side panels, and seat base. For a truly bespoke interior setup, contrast stitching in Crayon can be added upon request.
Priced at R3,037,000 for the S Coupe and R3,304,000 for the S Cabriolet, the sportscar exists to occupy a significant position for those who desire a balanced blend of Carrera performance without stepping up to the more extreme GTS model.
