Refreshed Isuzu mu-X makes its debut in Thailand
The ladder-frame chassis has attracted an increasing number of entrants into the SUV segment, thanks to the optimal combination of an excellent SUV's features and the sturdy framework typical of double-cab bakkies.
One such example is the Isuzu mu-X, which is based on the platform that underpins the D-Max bakkie. It initially joined the SUV segment in 2018 to rival the likes of the sales leaders of the pack, the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest, and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
It entered its second installment in 2021, which saw the new model bring notable improvements such as contemporary design cues, more space, and, among other things, a broadened engine range, including an efficient 1.9-litre turbocharged diesel powerplant.
Roughly three years later, the Isuzu mu-X is getting a mid-cycle facelift, and while the local launch timing isn’t known yet, the refreshed model has launched in Thailand, boasting a fresh new look that we quite like.
On the outside, the new mu-X gets a fresh new fascia with redesigned headlights and daytime running lights, a new front air curtain, and aluminium wheels. The rear lights get a new lighting signature and are now connected by a full-width dark trim element.
In line with the brand's 'Bold and Dynamic' design concept, Isuzu has added a 7-inch TFT LCD to the instrument panel and changed the seats and door trim.
In terms of safety, Isuzu has added what it calls the "next-generation stereo camera" for various safety features.
In Thailand, Isuzu has introduced the flagship mu-X RS, which brings a host of sportier features both inside and out. These include, among other features, black finishes on specific sections on the outside, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a bunch of RS badges.
We expect the current engine line-up to remain unchanged. As a refresher, the current lineup consists of the 1.9-litre turbocharged diesel engine with 110kW and 350Nm as well as the 3.0-litre turbodiesel with 140kW and 450Nm. Available in 4x2 and 4x4 guises, both configuration models shift through a 6-speed automatic transmission.
As stated in the beginning, the local launch timing of the refreshed mu-X remains unknown at this stage. According to Isuzu, it is still in the process of gathering all pertinent information and evaluating market dynamics to determine the optimal timing and strategy for its local release. However, if initial impressions are to go by, it brings notable changes that will help it stand out against the venerable Toyota Fortuner and exceptional Ford Everest, among other competitors.
