Subaru May Have Saved the WRX with the TR Edition
Subaru is a brand which we are rather fond of, and the WRX name is one which we love. The latest variation of the WRX is a good car but we feel that it doesn’t live up to its name, being more of an Impreza Sport than a WRX as it lacks the exciting thrills of old.
It is then exciting to learn that Subaru has made an effort to improve the WRX to be more of a driver-focused car. The WRX TR is due to be unveiled at Subiefest Florida, and there seem to be some interesting additions.
From the teaser images, we can see that the WRX is getting a braking upgrade with Brembo brakes. This is a big step in the right direction, as through my experience in the new WRX, the brakes have been a bit of an Achilles heel due to premature overheating. This upgrade alone makes the TR a lot more desirable, and the large red callipers add to the sports car aesthetic.
Speaking of looks, there will also be a new set of wheels on this special edition. At the time of publishing, there isn’t any information on the TR besides its unveiling date being the 7th of October 2023, meaning that it will most likely be in the market in early 2024. The question still stands as to whether or not we will receive these models in South Africa and, also, if Subaru will fiddle with the engine.
As much as we enthusiasts would have preferred to see the STI name in this story, the TR still commands an impressive amount of respect. The name TR stands for ‘Tuner Ready’ and was last seen on the 2006 WRX models.
I'm interested to see just what Subaru has added to this new unit. Could the TR redeem the WRX name for many die-hard Subaru fans out there? Watch this space to find out just what changes have been made to the new WRX.
