Subaru Outback: A More Powerful XT Variant Joins the Range

The Outback has always been synonymous with the Subaru nameplate thanks to its rugged stance to create an SUV-like vehicle. This formula has worked globally, given the unwavering love for crossovers and SUVs, especially in SA.

Unfortunately, station wagons have seen a significant decline over the years. Yet, Subaru has held on to the Outback despite the dying love for such cars, thanks to unmatched levels of space, impressive technology, and superb prowess on and off the road.

The Outback entered its sixth generation in 2021 with new technologies and a new potent 2.5-litre Boxer engine; only two variants were on offer.

For the 2023 model year, the Japanese marque is expanding its local line-up by introducing the XT flagship variant, deemed the most powerful iteration of the Outback.

Getting straight to the point, the Outback XT features the same 2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer engine that powers the WRX which is detuned to deliver 183 kW and 350 Nm of torque to all four wheels via the brand’s Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system. Paired with a CVT transmission, it hurtles from 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.

On looks alone, the XT is differentiated by new 18” black alloy wheels, and it’s available in nine body colours; new Autumn Green Metallic, Crystal White Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, Magnetite Grey Metallic, Storm Grey Metallic, Crystal Black Silica, Crimson Red Pearl, Dark Blue Pearl and a new Brilliant Bronze Metallic.

Considered the safest Outback ever, it features the EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, Subaru’s innovative Driver Monitoring System and DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation Systems.

The interior has a standard portrait 11.6” infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

With the new powerful 2.4-litre unit, the Japanese carmaker seems to have addressed the ‘underpowered’ issue afflicting the 2.5i engines.

Though we miss the previous generation’s 3.6-litre, the 2.4-litre Boxer is a welcome addition.
