SVI debuts armoured VW Golf GTI 8 as the ultimate bulletproof ally
The company Armormax was the last to make a similar announcement in 2023 when it unveiled its B4 ballistic-rated, bulletproof Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI.
This time around, SVI Engineering, known for armouring almost anything that lands in their workshop, has taken the wraps off its new SVI AK47 Golf 8 GTI, a bulletproof rapid-response vehicle specifically for the local market.
As its name suggests, the armoured Golf 8 GTI can withstand AK47 rounds thanks to the use of 3.5mm armoured steel plating, a revolutionary lightweight ballistic glass that is rated to stop four shots from an AK47 in a 300mm square space, and armour for critical powertrain components on the front fenders and battery surrounds.
“Hot hatches are well suited to rapid-response duties but are generally available only with level B4 armour, leaving occupants vulnerable to higher ballistic threats. The SVI AK47 Golf 8 GTI is our solution to that problem and may just be the fastest way to reach the scene of an in-progress crime without compromising on ballistic protection,” says Nicol Louw, SVI Business Development Director.
Unfortunately, there is a weight penalty associated with the armour. It adds about 340kg to the original 1,463kg, tipping the scales at approximately 1,803kg. According to SVI, the extra weight has minimal impact on the hot hatch’s acceleration and handling.
The armoured VW Golf 8 GTI will equip rapid responders in the private security sector and beyond with both the required speed and the required protection. The armour package is available for the GTI and R variants at the price of R649,500 (excluding VAT and the cost of the base vehicle). The project's build time comes in at about three months.
Speaking to Louw, there is no need for customers to go via the OEM. The patrons can purchase the base vehicle themselves, before bringing it to SVI for armouring.
Armoured vehicles have traditionally been associated with cash-in-transit services, the blue light brigades, and security companies, to name a few. However, with the escalating criminal activities in Mzansi, the introduction of the SVI AK47 Golf 8 GTI adds an essential layer of protection for individuals seeking improved security and peace of mind.
This development comes approximately two years after the tragic incident involving Amapiano producer DJ Sumbody, who was fatally shot while driving his Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI.
