The refreshed Audi A3 debuts with minimalist looks
Nearly three decades since its 1996 introduction, the Audi A3 has been a consistent option in the premium subcompact executive fold, and still, the model continues to vie in the respective stable, where the likes of the VW Golf, BMW 1 Series, and Mercedes-Benz A-Class fight for supremacy.
The Audi A3 entered its fourth generation in 2021 with a model that featured compact proportions and a sporty design. Three years later, the German manufacturer is giving the A3 a mid-cycle refresh to keep it fresh in the segment.
Like the pre-facelift models, the facelifted Audi A3 is available in sedan and sportback body configurations. While changes on the outside appear subtle, the hexagonal, frameless single-frame grille now boasts a new structure that appears flatter and wider. There are also new large angular side air intakes, a new rear bumper, and a distinctive diffuser.
The headlight clusters appear new, and for the first time in the A3, customers can select and switch between up to four digital daytime running light signatures using the MMI.
Moving inside, the pre-facelift model’s interior design soldiers on with the same 10.1-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, but there are subtle alterations such as a smaller e-shifter, new fabric inserts with lighting elements, and the addition of decorative cabin lighting now with 30 colour options.
Audi says it has expanded the standard equipment list to include the air conditioning, the ambient light package, and the front centre armrest.
Audi South Africa has yet to confirm the local model offerings, but we expect them to remain consistent with the current range. The expected line-up includes the 35 TFSI, 40 TFSI, and S3 TFSI quattro.
In addition, the European market will also get the A3 Allstreet crossover, which bears a resemblance to the VW CrossPolo. Increased ground clearance, a matte black single-frame grille, roof rails, a detachable tow hitch, and a comprehensive storage and trunk package all contribute to its distinctive aesthetic.
While changes are subtle, the refreshed Audi A3 seems to bring a range of exciting new features that should appeal to subcompact executive car buyers.
