Unleashing Extreme: Maserati's Ultimate Track Beast with MC20 DNA
Based on the gorgeous MC20, Maserati has lifted the veil on its track-only supercar, named the MCXtrema which the Modena-based marquee describes as a “veritable beast” designed for the track.
Like the MC20, the MCXtrema uses the same 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbocharged Nettuno engine but with 544kW of power and 729Nm courtesy of MCX-specific turbochargers. For comparison, the regular MC20 pumps out 463kW and has a similar torque figure.
The MCXtrema uses a 6-speed sequential gearbox that channels power to the rear wheels via a mechanical limited-slip differential.
Outside, there’s so much going on for the track weapon. It ups the ante with an aggressive stance, sharper bodywork, a carbon fibre front splitter, airflow curtains, and a completely flat underbody for enhanced aerodynamics. The MCXtrema also adds B-pillar air channels for cooling the V6 engine. The track weapon also gets a split air intake, a large diffuser, and trident-themed rear lights.
Inside, Maserati has gone to great lengths to ensure the MCXtrema as light as possible. In this case, the traditional dashboard has been replaced with a purpose-built structural crossbeam. There’s also a 5.0-inch display mounted on the steering wheel, which is complemented by buttons and rotary switches for various functions. The interior has bits and pieces finished in carbon fibre and aluminium finishes. Furthermore, buyers can customise the position of the steering wheel, pedals, and controls for each car.
For added safety, the MCXtrema has a 6-point racing harness and a full interior cage. Besides the standard fixed single-seat layout, a passenger seat is optional.
Maserati hasn’t disclosed the MCXtrema’s pricing yet, but it says it will only build 62 examples of these track-focused machines. All units have been snapped up by the lucky few who can afford them. Production of the MCXtrema is earmarked to begin in the second half of 2024, and customer deliveries will take place shortly after.
