Updated Peugeot 2008 Shows Face
Launched in Mzansi in 2021, the second-generation Peugeot 2008 is already getting a mid-cycle refresh which also sees the range getting an electrified model in the form of the E-2008.
Sold in three variants, Active, Allure and GT, the updated 2008 is the second model after the 508, which isn’t sold in SA, to wear the brand’s signature light portrayed by three vertical light claws integrated into the gloss black inserts of the bumper.
The front end is further equipped with the brand’s new Peugeot logo, which is finished in a gloss black shade on the Active model, while the Allure and GT variants get a body-coloured grille.
The effect extends to the full LED headlights of the range-topping GT variants. At the rear, the 2008 is fitted with new LED rear lights with three claws and LED indicators.
The base Active model rides on 16” Noma wheels, while the Allure and GT get bigger 17” Karakoy alloys. Buyers of the GT line can fit bigger 18” Evissa wheels as optional extras.
The new 2008 is now available in Selenium Grey, Okenite White, Artense Grey, Black Perla Nera, Elixir Red, Vertigo Blue and black bi-tone roof as standard for the GT model.
Regarding the interior, the entire range gets renewed seat fabrics, while the top-of-the-range GT can be had with new Alcantara upholstery as an option. The Allure and GT now get a 10” digital display (3D on the GT) and an analogue instrument cluster for the base trim.
The good thing is that all 2008 models now come standard with a 10” central touchscreen that replaces the pre-facelift model’s 7”. This is further complemented by ambient lighting that can be customised in eight colours.
The new 2008 is powered by standard ICE propulsion in the form of petrol and diesel engines but time will which ones are headed to our market. Speaking of the engines, you get the PureTech 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol unit that pumps out 74 kW of power accessed via a 6-speed manual transmission and a PureTech 130 with 96 kW paired with an 8-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission.
The oil burner comes in the form of the BlueHDi 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine that pushes out 96 kW and is only available with the auto as mentioned above box.
As for the E-2008, the fully-electric model uses a 54 kWh battery pack and an electric motor that produces 115 kW of power. The setup gives the B-SUV up to 406 km of driving range. It can be recharged using a single-phase 7.4 kW charger and, as an option, a 3-phase 11 kW charger.
Peugeot says a new hybrid powertrain will join the fray soon and will consist of a 48-Volt hybrid system paired with a petrol engine good for 101 kW. The engine will be coupled with a new 6-speed dual-clutch electrified gearbox.
Though it competes in a very tight segment, the Peugeot 2008 remains one of the best-looking small SUVs with impressive technology. With the refreshed model, the bar has been raised even further.
