VW ID.X Concept: A 411kW Electric Performance Saloon
Recently, Volkswagen previewed its ID.GTI Concept, hinting at future performance EVs with the GTI nomenclature. While it promises to become a notable silent hot hatch, another game-changer may arrive in the near future.
Bearing the ID.X Performance nameplate, the concept is based on the ID.7 model as a spiritual successor to the Passat and the Arteon mid-size sedans as the flagship model for the German marque.
As a fully electric performance saloon, the ID.X Performance makes use of two electric motors that pump out a total output of 411kW and like the regular ID.7, the performance model also comes with 200kW DC fast-charging capacity. Exploring the ID.X Performance further, we notice that its specs are comparable to the BMW i4 M50i and Audi RS e-Tron GT performance sedans with 400kW and 440kW, respectively.
As for the cruising range – a topic central to many EV debates – we expect the number to be slightly lower compared to the ID.7’s claimed 700km range.
In contrast to the standard ID.7, Volkswagen has endowed the ID.X Performance with several significant tweaks to highlight its performance-oriented stance. These include a prominent carbon fibre front splitter, a rear diffuser, tinted rear lights, a chic rear wing, a matte grey paint scheme, 20-inch alloy wheels, and for better handling prowess, the ride height has been lowered by 60mm.
Inside, red accents serve as a reminder of its performance pedigree. These are supplemented by carbon bucket seats, Alcantara on top of the dashboard and door cards, a tiny instrument cluster, and a familiar 15-inch infotainment system that runs the latest MIB system.
At this stage, there’s no confirmation that the ID.7 X Performance Concept will reach production but if it does, it will position the brand in a whole new segment of performance saloons with performance to boot as electrification rewrites the chapter of performance. Only time, though, will tell.
