VW's CEO teases exclusive Golf GTI Edition to mark its 50th anniversary
This year, the Volkswagen Golf is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and over the past five decades, it has left an indelible mark on the global automotive market, with eight generations built to cater to the global market.
Despite the current trend towards electrification, the Golf's internal combustion engine variant continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many.
As we celebrate the Golf's half-century, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer posted a video on LinkedIn with the caption, "A new car is coming. We are returning to the Nürburgring for the 24-hour race to celebrate the world premiere with the fans."
Set to debut on May 31 during the Nurburgring 24 Hours, a closer inspection of the video reveals a Golf 8 GTI flexing its muscles around the 'Ring. Unfortunately, it's hard to determine the essential details of this unique model in the video.
Having said that, we anticipate that this model will come equipped with distinctive features on both the inside and outside. These may include features such as bespoke bumpers, wheels, edition stickers, and an interior with distinctive elements.
As for the number of examples, there is a possibility that VW might produce only 50 models to commemorate the anniversary. Call it the Edition 50 or Clubsport 50, but we expect it to have raised power figures compared to the stock Golf GTI, which makes 189kW and 370Nm from a 2.0-litre TSI engine.
With improved power figures, reaching the 100km/h mark will likely be quicker. For reference sake, the standard Golf GTI accomplishes the same task in 6.4 seconds while shifting through a 7-speed DSG transmission that drives the front wheels.
At this stage, it's uncertain whether the special Golf GTI will make its way to Mzansi. However, considering past unique iterations of the Golf GTIs, like the Golf 8 GTI Clubsport, which never made it to SA, this might as well be considered forbidden fruit.
Yet, we remain hopeful and keep our fingers crossed.
