Ford's new E-Transit Custom promises sustainable logistics

In May of this year, Ford released images and a few details of its E-Transit Custom model as the brand takes another step further towards electrification.

As a business support vehicle, the new E-Transit panel van is available with two lengths and two roof heights with load volumes that measure between 5.8 to 9.0 cubic metres and a payload of up to 1,100 kg, as well as a towing capacity of 2,000 kg. Buyers can choose between double-cab-in-van and kombi body styles, all with a choice of short or long wheelbase and low or high roof.

While it remains to be seen if the E-Transit Custom will be offered locally, European markets can choose between two powertrains; standard and a more potent variant with 100 kW and 160 kW respectively. The torque figures remain at 415 Nm for both guises.

Powering the Ford E-Transit Custom is a 400-Volt, 74 kWh battery pack that gives the panel van up to 380 km of driving range. Getting the batteries recharged using a DC fast charging facility with up to 125 kW allows for a 15-80% recharge in 41 minutes, while an 11 kW AC three-phase onboard charger gets the battery pack fully charged in 7.8 hours.

Not full-charge ahead, yet...

For those who still prefer traditional-adjacent power, there's a plug-in hybrid that pairs with a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an 11.8 kWh battery pack that's good for up to 57 km of fully electric driving range. A pure diesel variant is also available with four outputs to choose from; 81 kW, 100 kW, 110 kW or 125 kW.

Regarding the variants fitted with traditional powertrains, they can be had either with a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic.

The interior of the E-Transit Custom features a driver-orientated 13" landscape touchscreen that spawns the brand's SYNC 4 10 communication and infotainment system powered by a new 5G modem for connectivity to the Ford Pro-tech stack.

The E-Transit will share some of its technologies with the upcoming fully-electric Volkswagen Transporter as part of the agreement between the two marques.
