Mercedes-Benz reveals the first-ever fully electric C-Class

Five generations of fighting the 3 Series with a combustion engine, Stuttgart is now bringing electrons to the fight.

Mercedes-Benz reveals the first-ever fully electric C-Class

The C-Class has always been an important model for Mercedes-Benz. Since the first generation arrived roughly 33 years ago, it has carried the brand’s statement against the BMW 3 Series, five generations of that fight, and it’s never really let Stuttgart down.

Now, Mercedes has completely reimagined the formula. Meet the first-ever fully electric C-Class.

It’s a stunning thing. Fascinatingly different and yet reassuringly familiar, something that genuinely cannot be said about what BMW has brought to this fight. The front is anchored by a bold new grille, a wide chrome frame, a smoked-glass mesh structure, and an integrated central star. It’s got that retro design going on, and it works. Worth mentioning is that the surrounding contour lighting and the grille itself can illuminate when opening, closing, or charging the car.

‘Round the back, Mercedes leaned further into that retro flare. The fastback roofline drops cleanly into deep red star-design taillights. It’s original, characterful, and a proper design that doesn’t look out of place.

Inside, the setup is futuristic. There’s an optional 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen that dominates the dashboard (the largest ever fitted to a C-Class), and the cabin around it looks generous, at least in pictures. You also get adjustable seats, materials that blend modern sustainability with a genuine premium feel and what Merc regards as a silent EV interior. The panoramic roof is worth a mention here, as it embeds dozens of LED points into the glass to create a starlight effect overhead – a luxury detail we have previously associated only with ultra high-end products.

Under the skin, the C400 4Matic launch variant features an electric motor on each axle for a combined 360kW and 800Nm. The 94kWh battery delivers up to 762km of range, and a 10-minute charge adds 325km via the 800-volt architecture’s 330kW DC charging capability. The 0-100km/h performance is rated at 4.0 seconds flat. Mercedes also plans rear-wheel-drive variants arriving in 2027, expected to exceed 800km of range, as well as more AWD variants. An AMG derivative is confirmed as well, which means this is only the beginning.

On the other side in Bavaria, BMW isn’t coming empty-handed to the fight. The new i3 50 xDrive, built on the Neue Klasse platform, produces 345kW and 645Nm, claims 900km of range, and charges at up to 400kW, adding 400km in 10 minutes. On paper, Munich has the advantage in range and charging speed. Where Stuttgart fights back is in character since the electric C-Class looks like a Mercedes while the i3 is a properly futuristic piece of kit. What’s telling is who isn’t in this fight. Audi, traditionally the third corner of the premium German triangle, hasn’t quite entered the ring at this level.

What makes the Mercedes-Benz C-Class worth it isn’t just that it’s electric; it’s how normal it looks considering its electrification. Mercedes has managed to build an EV that still carries the DNA of a proper C-Class, and that’s a bigger deal and in a market like ours, familiarity and character matter. More importantly, it also gives us a clear glimpse of where the sedan is heading without losing the familiarity of what made it work in the first place.
