Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic: A luxe EV concept that honours its heritage

Looking like something straight out of a sci-fi flick, this is Mercedes-Benz’s Vision Iconic, which showcases where the brand might take EVs and luxury design in the future.

What immediately grabs your attention is that enormous front grille. It’s impossible to miss, and somehow, it feels familiar. You can’t help but think back to those grand old Mercedes sedans like the W108, W111, and the majestic 600 Pullman, all proudly wearing their chrome grilles. The Vision Iconic clearly takes inspiration from that heritage, but with a fresh, futuristic twist to it.

The detailing is drenched in chrome and framed by a smoked-glass lattice, with subtle contour lighting running through it, similar to what we’ve seen in the new all-electric GLC. And yes, even the upright three-pointed star on the bonnet lights up. It’s such a small touch, but honestly, it’s refreshing to see Mercedes leaning back into its iconic design DNA.

Design-wise, the concept oozes style. It has a timeless coupe silhouette, long bonnet and sloping roofline. It feels both familiar and futuristic while reminding us of the AMG GT silhouette.

Step inside, though, and it’s an entirely different world. The interior feels less like a car and more like a luxurious lounge. You’re greeted by deep-blue velvet bench seats that look impossibly plush, while the floor features straw veneer laid out in a stunning Art Deco pattern, something you rarely, if ever, see in cars anymore.

Then there’s the ‘Zeppelin’ floating glass dashboard, which merges classic analogue-style dials with hidden digital displays. And that steering wheel? A masterpiece on its own. It’s a 4-spoke design with the Mercedes emblem suspended in a glass-like sphere, almost like a piece of fine jewellery.

Apart from its promised Level 4 autonomous driving, the Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic also features solar-active paint that can capture sunlight and turn it into energy. In perfect conditions, this technology could add up to around 12,000km of extra driving range per year.

As of now, the Vision Iconic is still very much a concept; Mercedes hasn’t hinted at putting it into production. The way it’s designed balances classic cues with a modern twist so refreshingly, and it would be great if some of these ideas made their way into future EVs. Many of Mercedes’ current EVs feel a little safe and predictable, so even a touch of the Iconic’s bold, cohesive style could give the brand’s EVs a real spark.
