Toyota Gazoo Racing and Haas F1 form technical partnership

Toyota last participated in Formula 1 as both a constructor and engine supplier from 2002 to 2009. However, at the end of the 2009 season, the company withdrew from the sport primarily due to the global financial crisis, forcing Toyota to reallocate resources and concentrate on its main business activities.

Fast forward to 2024, and the brand’s Gazoo Racing division has announced its return to F1 as a technical partner with the Haas F1 Team. This is the Japanese brand’s first foray into F1 since then.

While the partnership looks all set, the brand has reportedly ruled out a full return to Formula 1.

Speaking about the partnership, the two companies aim to contribute to the growth of the automotive industry by creating an environment in which young Japanese drivers, engineers, and mechanics can gain experience and grow in F1.

Specifically, the agreement includes the participation of TGR’s training drivers, engineers, and mechanics in the MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s test drives. This will allow them to develop their skills and expertise in a highly competitive and technologically advanced setting.

In addition to this, TGR engineers and mechanics will collaborate to enhance the aerodynamics of the MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s racing cars. This means they will be involved in designing and creating carbon-fibre parts, which are critical for the car’s performance, especially in high-speed and high-stress conditions.

The knowledge and technology they acquire through this partnership will not only help the team excel in Formula 1 but will also enhance Toyota’s production vehicles by making them more refined and efficient.
