The concept of a Nürburgring lap record for executive cars may seem absurd to some but not to us and not to the corporate big wigs at Mercedes-AMG and Porsche. For a few years the AMG GT4-dr enjoyed the title of ‘fastest executive saloon’ around the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife.
In July this year, a few months before Porsche launched the updated Panamera to the world, a new lap record was set in a Porsche Panamera Turbo S beating the previous GT-record by a few tenths of a second. So guess what just happened?
On 4 November 2020, the AMG GT 4-door made a comeback, smashing the 20,682km lap in 7m27.800s, over 2-seconds faster.
The record is allegedly verified by Nordschleife standards, but the question is how? Was it the driver perhaps? Well partly of course, but the AMG GT has been updated with improved suspension tuning for a start. The car that broke the record was also fitted with some optional aero bits that one can spec on a new AMG GT. And the tyres were Michelin Cup2s in case you were wondering.
And there you have it. Over to you Stuttgart. We'll get the popcorn.
