Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 debuts as an AMG entry-level model
Set to usher the new CLE buyers into the AMG fold is the newly-revealed Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic+ model, which brings with it a host of unique features.
Just in case you missed our report on the CLE nameplate and are wondering what it is, well, it’s a coupe replacement for the C-Class and E-Class coupe variants. It's intended to keep the coupe spirit alive, promising to offer a sporty ride with enough power to give competitors, such as the Audi A5 and BMW 4 Series, a stiff challenge.
So, what does the new CLE 53 bring to the table? To begin with, it employs a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder engine with 330kW and 560Nm of torque (or 600Nm on overboost for 12 seconds) while shuffling through a 9-speed AMG transmission that sends all power to all wheels through the 4Matic+ system.
Similar to the majority of modern AMGs, the CLE 53 features double charging, which employs an electric secondary compressor in addition to an exhaust gas turbocharger.
Regarding the performance, the CLE 53 gallops from 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds en route to an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h or, if you like, Merc can optionally increase it to 270km/h.
To visually differentiate the CLE 53 from its regular counterpart, the AMG variant features two powerful power domes on the bonnet, an AMG-specific A-shaped radiator grille, flat full-LED headlights, aerodynamic bits and pieces such as a large inlet, a front apron, flared-out front and rear fenders, and a wider track that measures 58mm wider at the front and 75mm at the rear when compared to the normal models.
A dark red design element connects the CLE 53's rear lights, which have two-part LED lights with a three-dimensional lighting effect. The spoiler lip on the boot lid is finished in the vehicle colour, but customers can have it in black as part of the optional AMG styling package.
The CLE 53 AMG Coupe sits on 19-inch wheels as standard, while a 20-inch set can be fitted as an option.
For further individualisation, Mercedes-Benz offers two AMG Night packages and two AMG Carbon packages.
Moving inside, the CLE 53 comes standard with a host of AMG-specific features, such as an AMG performance steering wheel in a double-spoke design, a free-standing 12.3-inch fully digital driver display, and an 11.9-inch portrait central display.
Other features include the integral seats in ARTICO man-made leather, black microfiber with AMG-specific graphics, red contrasting topstitching, red seat belts, and glossy carbon trim. Buyers can choose from numerous upholstery options in leather and Nappa leather upon request.
Mercedes-Benz South Africa hasn’t communicated the local availability of the CLE 53, but the European market will receive its first batch sometime in 2024.
With its many features, the new CLE 53 is a breath of fresh air in the slowly dying performance coupe market.
