Mitsubishi Outlander Sport takes a daring plunge into more athletic territory

In 2023, Mitsubishi introduced the current generation Outlander, a captivating midsize SUV that continues to impress with its competitive pricing, extensive feature set, and the flexibility of an optional 7-seater configuration.

This model quickly became a popular choice in the segment, offering a balanced mix of practicality, performance, and style.

Two years later, Mitsubishi is expanding the Outlander product range by introducing the sportier Outlander Sport in an effort to capture the attention of a new buying demographic. Based on the brand’s Silky & Solid concept, the Outlander Sport features an authentic SUV look, making it an instant head-turner.

Many will agree that recent Mitsubishi offerings, such as the Triton and Outlander, look exceptionally stunning. The Outlander Sport seems to continue this trend. It features the signature Dynamic Shield grille, which has been refined to showcase the brand’s evolving design ethos. This is further complemented by the sleek LED daytime running lights, which feature an L-shaped motif with slotted accents. The rear also gets a T-shaped lighting setup that stretches towards the middle section of the tailgate.

Moving inside, there is a large 12.3-inch infotainment system and an 8-inch digital driver display for the range-topping Aspire and Exceed variants, while the GL and GLS get a smaller 8-inch touchscreen system plus a 4.2-inch multi-information display.

What really draws the eye, at least in the pictures, is the melange fabric padding that extends from the instrument panel to the door trim. It's a striking touch, giving the cabin a refined and somewhat premium vibe. The last time we saw this type of detailing was in the current Mini Countryman and Range Rover Sport. I’m not suggesting a direct comparison, but it’s worth mentioning. Also, the top-of-the-range Exceed variant is equipped with a Dynamic Sound Yamaha Premium with 8 speakers as well as four sound types: Lively, Signature, Powerful, and Relaxing.

Powering the range is a sole 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine with 77kW and 141Nm plus a CVT transmission that drives the front wheels. Despite being a front-wheel-drive car, it comes fitted with four drive modes for some soft-roading capability: Normal, Wet, and Mud.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is undeniably a welcome addition to the lineup, bringing a fresh, dynamic vibe to the range. However, one aspect that may leave some wanting more is the engine and gearbox. While the overall design and sporty styling are on point, you can’t help but feel that the brand missed a chance to back up the ‘Sport’ badge with a little extra punch under the bonnet.

  • Outlander Sport 1.5 GL CVT: R429,990
  • Outlander Sport 1.5 GLS CVT: R449,990
  • Outlander Sport 1.5 Aspire CVT: R479,990
  • Outlander Sport 1.5 Exceed CVT: R499,990

The range is sold with a 3-year/45,000km service plan as well as a 5-year/unlimited mileage warranty as standard.
