Mitsubishi Triton Teased Ahead of July Debut
The bakkie market is a fierce arena where mighty rivals clash monthly, vying for supremacy on the sales charts and bragging rights with their numbers.
The Mitsubishi Triton is one great example that has ruled the roost for many years as a bakkie that delivers superb value without breaking the bank.
While older generations of the Triton felt lagging in many areas compared to rivals, the current generation's facelift in 2019 made beneficial strides to put it back on the radar.
For the 2023 model, the Japanese manufacturer is slated to retire the fifth generation with a fresh new model earmarked to make its official global debut on July 26. At this stage, the marque has only released a teaser image that gives us a glimpse of what's to come.
Previewed with the XRT concept in March, the Triton's style has been created under the idea of 'Beast Mode', which expresses the toughness and powerfulness of the pick-up.
From what we see, the new Triton's front fascia follows the brand's maturity recipe, showcasing split-LED headlights, a boxy chrome grille, beefed-up fenders, and a rear end with LED taillights and a more sculpted tailgate.
The teaser video shows a bit of the dashboard. From it, we can see the floating infotainment screen, as seen on the Outlander, a rotary dial for the 4WD system, a drive mode button, and piano-style switches placed on the centre console just below the climate controls.
Mitsubishi remains tight-lipped regarding the detailed specifications of its Triton, but we know it shares its underpinning with the Nissan Navara as part of the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance and could make use of an enhanced 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine that powers the current model.
An electric-assisted variant is expected to join the range at a later stage, likely in 2025.
The new Triton is set to make a grand entrance on July 26, and the teasers promise a radical makeover from the current model, which trails behind its rivals in areas such as engine refinement and cabin quality.
When it arrives, it will face off against other bakkie stalwarts such as the Volkswagen Amarok, Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, Ford Ranger and Peugeot Landtrek, among others.
