Peugeot 208 Receives a Modish Makeover
While Peugeot may not be SA's favourite car brand in terms of sales volume, we can all probably agree that it knows how to style a car.
The Peugeot 208 is a popular choice for those who want a stylish hatchback for city driving. Peugeot has, though, taken things in the looks department up a notch with the latest iteration of the 208.
The new look is primarily present at the front end, with a large front grille with coloured accents and the 208 now sporting an artistically aggressive bumper. Its three lion-claw lighting signature adds to the futuristic appeal and brightens the car's looks. Peugeot claims that this light design was influenced by their 9X8 hypercar, and it's easy to see the resemblance.
The interior has been given an even more modern look with uniquely-shaped panels housing the driver's display and other controls, a square-shaped minimalist steering wheel, and eye-catching patterns stitched into the seats. Additionally, the 10" infotainment screen has been revamped.
Now, onto the heart of the car. The 208 will now have a few extra power units to choose from. The first is its traditional petrol motor with 5 or 6-speed transmissions. If you're interested in going hybrid, you're in luck, as there's now a hybrid option. This model includes a 48-volt electric motor, which can improve fuel economy by a claimed 15%. Additionally, it offers a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission for quicker gear changes.
The biggest news, though, is the EV version of the 208. It's called the e-208, with the fully-electric hatchback developing 115 kW of power. Its 51 kWh battery will allow up to 400 km of range per full charge.
The 208 looks impressive, and although it might be one of Europe's best-selling cars, it will be interesting to see if it will entice SA buyers. Judging by local palates, though, hatchbacks like the VW Polo, Renault Clio and Hyundai i20 shouldn't have sleepless nights just yet.
As for the EV option, there hasn't been any official news about its release in SA. However, with glacially-gradual electric vehicle adoption locally, it may prove to be a viable future-proofing prospect for Peugeot's local arm.
