Toyota Adds Hilux Raider X Limited Edition to Local Range
The Toyota Hilux remains one of SA’s favourite and most capable bakkies and has earned its fame as a best-of-both-worlds product.
Just in June alone, Toyota sold 3,792 units of the Hilux, thus making it the sales champion in SA, despite its ageing platform.
That said, Toyota wants to increase its sales volume by introducing the limited-edition Raider X Limited Edition based on the Raider 2.4 GD-6 4x4 variant. The X model, therefore, replaces the donor vehicle in its standard guise for a limited period only.
The Raider X Limited Edition model stands out from the crowd with its sleek black fenders with a touch of red, a shiny grille that spells out Hilux, a black bar that adds some flair, a cover that protects your cargo, Raider X badges plus new 17-inch black multi-spoke alloys.
The X can be had in ten exterior shades; Glacier White, Attitude Black, Arizona Red, Graphite Grey, Chromium Silver, Cosmic Blue, Oxide Bronze, Sand Beige, Orange Metallic and Platinum White Pearl.
Toyota has specified a rubberised cargo bed as part of the limited edition package.
Inside, the X remains a well-specced Hilux with cruise control, a TFT multi-info display, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth functionality, a multi-functional steering wheel and a reverse camera.
Mechanically, the Hilux Raider X remains unchanged. It’s still powered by the solid and competent 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine that produces 110kW and 400Nm. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
We sampled the same powerplant in various Toyota applications. There’s plenty of low-down power delivery to make even towing a simple task, and with enough torque in the low rev range, the engine proves quite frugal.
When it comes to safety, the new Hilux Raider X is fitted with a range of passive and active safety systems such as ABS with EBD, traction control and VSC, airbags, rear ISOFIX child-seat attachment points, front and rear park distance control and anti-theft.
Bakkies, particularly in South Africa, are a favoured substitute for big SUVs, and their improved driving capabilities have made them even more appealing to buyers.
