It was over 50 years ago when the Opel Manta was introduced with a four-cylinder petrol engine driving the rear wheels.

As a once-off project, Opel is resurrecting the model as the first electric MOD in the history of the German marque.

Dubbed the Manta GSe ElektroMOD, the new model resurrects with an electric power plant instead of the ICE engine spawned by its forebear as well as combining classic appearance of a style icon together with latest technology for sustainable motoring.

“The Manta GSe impressively demonstrates the enthusiasm with which we build cars at Opel. It combines our great Opel tradition with today's commitment to emissions-free mobility for a very desirable, sustainable future. Opel is already electric with many models – and now the legendary Manta is too,” says Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller.

The Manta is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that pushes out 108 kW and 255 Nm. It drives through a four-speed manual transmission.

Opel claims the Manta GSe ElektroMOD can travel for about 200 km before the 31 kWh lithium-ion battery runs out of power.

Getting the Manta fully recharged will take just under 4 hours via a 9.0 kW on-board charger for single-phase and three-phase AC charging.

In the design perspective, the Manta is fitted with the Opel Pixel-Vizor stretched across the entire width of the vehicle. It comes wearing a neon yellow paintwork that is complimented by a black bonnet.

It runs on specially designed 17” light alloy wheels from Ronal shod with 195/40 R17 tyres at the front and 205/40 R17 at the rear.

The interior is bolstered with Opel’s digital technology that comes courtesy of a wide Pure Panel borrowed from the new production Mokka as well as 12 and 10” widescreens.

Opel makes mention of Bluetooth and an amplifier from Marshall as part of the package.
