The Ford Capri lives again

The Ford Capri is a historic coupe for the Ford brand. It’s a car that was made in Europe to reflect the love of the Mustang in a smaller package. Originally released in 1969, this compact 2-door car grew to become a classic over time. However, a new model has emerged that, well, doesn't really resemble the classic at all.

The new Capri embodies the modern motoring mindset and will come in two variations when it launches in Europe. The first is the standard option, which offers a single electric motor that produces 212kW with a 0-100km/h time of 6.4 seconds. It has a 77kWh battery with a range of 628 kilometres, which is rather impressive for an EV SUV.

The second variation is the Premium option, which provides AWD via two electric motors with a total power output of 251kW, offering a 0-100km/h time of 5.3 seconds. It also provides a competitive range of 594 kilometres.

At this time, the European price falls to around R1,120,000 for the single motor, and the dual motor option comes in at R1,212,000. Considering the performance, the price is fairly competitive, but the local price will undoubtedly be higher thanks to applicable taxes and duties.

The exterior is bold on the new Capri too; it's clear the design team leaned into the futuristic design language, and it does look the part. It is exciting that Ford is bringing the Capri nameplate back, and it could be heading to SA in the coming years. It is slightly disappointing that the beloved Capri sports car has been recreated in a somewhat sporty family SUV, but what Ford has created appears to be interesting nonetheless.
