Here’s how much the new BMW 7 Series costs in SA

Revealed in April for the world to see, BMW has finally put a price tag on the new SA-bound 7 Series range.

Unlike overseas markets, South Africa is only getting three derivatives; the 740i, 740d xDrive and for the first time ever, the i7 xDrive60 as reported in our April article here. The trio is available in three trim levels to suit the buyer’s needs; Design Pure Excellence, M Sport Package and M Sport Package Pro.

Like the Mercedes-Benz EQS rival, the i7 xDrive60 packs a 101.7 kWh battery pack that powers two electric motors bolted on each axle. The setup is good for 400 kW of power and 745 Nm of torque, thanks to 230 kW and 190 kW produced by the rear and front electric motors respectively.

Regarding performance, the i7 xDrive60 blisters silently from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, which is faster than you can probably read this piece. Its top speed is capped at 240 km/h. The battery pack can be recharged using AC power with up to 11 kW as well as DC charging with up to 195 kW.

BMW says that about 170 km of driving range can be added in just ten minutes.

Accompanying the i7 is the 740i, which employs a 3.0-litre in-line straight-six engine with 280 kW of power and 520 Nm of torque. The 48V mild-hybrid technology pumps out 9 kW and 200 Nm for short bursts.

It hurtles from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds before hitting the top speed at 250 km/h.

The sole turbodiesel variant in the form of the 740d xDrive houses a 3.0-litre straight-six engine with 210 kW and 650 Nm. Both ICE variants wield an 8-speed Steptronic gearbox as standard.

At the same time, BMW SA has also revealed the pricing of the new X7 that is earmarked to go on sale locally in the fourth quarter of 2022.
