Volkswagen teases next-gen Amarok

When it launches in 2022, the new Amarok will be impressing with numerous innovations.

Seems like the folks at Volkswagen are readying their second generation of the Amarok bakkie following the recent unveiling of the Ford Ranger that shares its DNA makeup with the Amarok.

Scheduled to make its premiere in 2022, the new Amarok will be an entirely new product with clear Volkswagen DNA despite sharing a platform with the blue-oval marque.

There is still very little information regarding the second-gen Amarok but VW promises it will spawn a new look both inside and out whilst also gaining extensive equipment on board.

“The Amarok makes possible what in many places appears impossible at first sight: it makes things easier for its users by assisting them in their work and everyday lives”, says Dr Lars Krause, Brand Board of Management Member for Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

When it finally launches, the new Amarok will feature more driver-assist systems and will ‘impress’ in terms of connectivity and appearance.

In the teaser interior image, the new Amarok seems to be getting a massive tablet-like infotainment touchscreen plus a newly-designed gear-selector.

Accompanying the press release from the Wolfburg-based carmaker is a snapshot of the Amarok and while it reveals very little, it seems to have enlarged wheel arches, a familiar VW grille as well as new headlights with distinctive LED daytime running lights.

“The striking front, and above all the defining X design clearly distinguish the new Amarok and emphasise its claim to be leading the way”, confirms Albert-Johann Kirzinger, Head of Design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “

Powertrain details aren’t known at this stage but we expect a slightly-tweaked 3.0-litre V6 diesel unit to power the Amarok.

For reference, the Amarok has been on sale over the last decade and over 800,000 units have found homes globally.

The new Volkswagen Amarok will partly be built alongside the new Ford Ranger at the Silverton plant in Pretoria.
