Foton’s first pre-production CKD bakkie rolls off the line in Mzansi

Since its comeback to the local market in 2024, Foton has been quietly yet confidently climbing its way back into the conversation. It’s quickly becoming one of the most talked-about Chinese manufacturers in South Africa, and the brand is clearly on a mission to cement its place on the continent while expanding its global reach.

When Foton re-entered the market, it came armed with an ambitious blueprint called the ‘Lighthouse Plan’, a bold strategy aimed at turning Africa into a key growth hub, with South Africa as the beating heart of its operations.

Now, that plan is clearly gaining momentum. The first pre-production CKD Tunland bakkie has officially rolled off the line at Foton’s Gqeberha plant, the same facility where BAIC carries out its own CKD operations. According to Foton, this milestone not only strengthens its production capabilities on the continent but also lays the groundwork for long-term sustainability through local supplier development, job creation, and skills transfer. Beyond that, local assembly means faster after-sales support and easier access to parts, a major win for customers. It also gives Foton the flexibility to tailor its vehicles to African conditions, customer preferences, and the ever-evolving demands of the market.

Regarding the Tunland G7 double cab, particularly in its Limited trim, it’s one of the most surprising products to come from the East in recent memory. It blends strong engineering with thoughtful touches that show how far the brand has come.

Looking ahead, Foton has made it clear that it plans to expand its locally assembled lineup, a move that shows real commitment to the continent. What’s even more exciting is that many of the units produced here won’t just stay local; they’ll be shipped to markets across the continent. As for the bakkie itself, it’ll be interesting to see how it holds its own in SA’s fiercely competitive bakkie scene, a market dominated by some of the toughest and most loyal contenders out there.
