Lexus LX 700h now in SA

Lexus is big on hybrids, and its first luxury hybrid SUV, the RX 400h, was launched in 2005. At the time, it may not have been considered a major breakthrough, but today, as nearly every automaker pushes the boundaries of electrification, the brand’s early adoption of hybrids is worth celebrating.

Meet the Lexus LX 700h, the latest hybrid entrant. It joins the existing LX 500 variants and brings a blend of luxury, performance, off-road credentials, and efficiency to the respective fold. It’s available in three trim levels: Overtrail, F Sport, and VIP. All are powered by a 3.5-litre V6 turbo-petrol engine that works in tandem with a hybrid system for a combined power output of 341kW and 790Nm. A 10-speed automatic transmission comes standard across the range.

From a design perspective, the LX 700h makes a strong impression. For instance, the Overtrail showcases its ruggedness with 18-inch wheels plus a new Desert Moonlight exterior colour. Meanwhile, the mid-range F Sport adds a sportier aesthetic, thanks to an exclusive black mesh grille, bigger 22-inch aluminium wheels, and an interior trimmed with bespoke dimpled leather. As its name suggests, the VIP adds what Lexus calls NASA-inspired reclining captain’s chairs with built-in ottomans, 48-degree recline functionality at the push of a button, contoured headrests, and massaging seats.

The Lexus LX, a more luxurious version of the Toyota Land Cruiser 300, has long been renowned for its superior comfort, family-friendly practicality, and formidable off-road capability. However, this comes at a cost. For example, the flagship LX 700h VIP costs R3,092,100, while the base LX 500 F Sport is priced at R2,557,500.

For context, that’s an eye-watering R1,045,400 more than Toyota’s entry-level Land Cruiser 300 GX-R. However, given Lexus’ positioning as a premium brand, the significant price jump is, to some extent, justified by the added luxury and advanced technology.

Pricing

LX 500 F Sport: R2,557,500

LX 500 Overtrail: R2,577,400

LX 700h F Sport: R2,666,500

LX 700h Overtrail: R2,703,600

LX 700h VIP: R3,092,100

The range comes with a 7-year/100,000km warranty and a full maintenance plan. Vehicle service intervals are at 10,000km for both HEV and diesel models or once a year. The hybrid models come with an additional 8-year/195,000km hybrid battery warranty.
