The Type 01: The new name for Jaguar’s new EV
Jaguar has caused quite a stir in recent years. The brand that gave us British elegance recently made a sharp left turn, ditching its whole ICE-powered range and unveiling a concept car that left the internet divided. Love or hate it, we now have a glimpse of what its new luxury four-door GT will be named. It’s called the Type 01, and it appears ready to make a statement.
To unpack the name with greater detail, let’s start with the ‘Type’. First appearing on the Le Mans-winning C-Type, it pays homage to the brand’s performance legacy. To Jaguar, ‘Type’ reflects two characters in one car. One which captures an engaging drive with deep reserves of power while retaining a keen focus on refinement and composure.
Working through the name, the ‘0’ is simple. It represents ‘zero’ emissions and electric power, while the ‘1’ marks it as the first model from the brand’s ‘new era’, announced in 2024. It’s a clever piece of naming, and one that quietly nods to the Jaguar we know and lost.
The new name will appear between the bonnet and windscreen. It’s a small detail, but one that works. Besides the name, we also have an idea of what it’s all about in terms of numbers, and it’s no slouch. It makes a colossal 735kW and 1,300Nm through the brand’s tri-motor technology, with early reports suggesting an EV range of up to 640km between chargers.
Jaguar’s return is slowly gaining traction, and I must say, this is the first point that intrigues me about the otherwise controversial rebrand. Performance is clearly still paramount, but the name should also mean something. Is this an attempt at retaining some of the Jaguar villainy we familiarise the brand with, or is Jaguar’s new identity a bridge too far? Time will tell, but the plot is thickening.
