50 Years of Golf GTI: All generations in one place

50 years. One badge. Endless Vrrrpha grins. In this special feature, Jordan takes a deep dive into five decades of one of South Africa’s most beloved performance icons. The Volkswagen Golf GTI. From its humble, lively beginnings in the Mk1 to the sharpened, tech-laden Mk8.5, this is the full evolution of the original hot hatch, told generation by generation, story by story, rev by rev. We trace the DNA that made the GTI a global benchmark: lightweight mischief in Mk1 form, everyday hero status in the Mk2, the rise of refinement in the Mk3, and onwards through the eras that shaped a badge synonymous with accessible performance. Each generation plays its part in a larger story, one of consistency, reinvention, and relentless fun. We also spend proper time with the all-new Golf 8.5 GTI. A modern interpretation of the formula, packed with tech, sharpened dynamics, and enough performance to remind you why the GTI badge still matters in a world of ever-growing power figures and digital dashboards. Due to technical issues on the day, the Mk4 and Mk7.5 GTIs were unfortunately unable to attend the shoot at the last minute. While they’re missed in the physical lineup, their place in the GTI story remains undeniable as key chapters in a legacy that shaped the car you see today. This isn’t just a review. It’s a celebration. Fifty years of the car that taught the world that performance can be achieved in a smaller package. A big thanks goes to all the GTI owners who joined us in producing this film. Hit subscribe, buckle up, and join us as we honour the legend that is the Golf GTI.
