Finally! Volkswagen Golf 8 R Pricing Announced

Despite its delayed arrival, it’s still a hot hatch of note.

Finally! Volkswagen Golf 8 R Pricing Announced

It has taken Volkswagen South Africa quite some time to slap the Golf 8 R with a price tag since we had a jaunt in the hot hatch in October 2022.

Now that the wait is over, VW SA says that the Golf 8 R will officially go on sale at the end of April and carries a price tag of R912,800. For reference, its bigger-bodied Tiguan R is priced at R999,980, while its hot hatch cousin bearing the Audi S3 logo is priced at R906,100.

But why the long wait? VW SA cites that production constraints and parts shortages have affected launch plans.

To refresh your memory, the Golf 8 R uses a 2.0-litre EA 888 2.0-litre TSI engine that pumps out 235 kW and 400 Nm of torque channelled to all-fours via the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. It dashes from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds before maxing out at 250 km/h while shifting through a 7-speed DSG transmission.

The 8 R comes with a range of standard features such as 19″ Estoril alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, mobile inductive charging, keyless entry with safe lock, ‘Discover Pro’ navigation system, voice control and adaptive chassis control, including driving profile selection.

Other features include a Light and Vision Package, Nappa leather R sport seats, and a choice of three exterior colours; Pure White, Lapiz Blue metallic and Deep Black Pearl.

Buyers can have optional features at an added fee, such as IQ. Light LED Matrix headlights, Akrapovič R Performance exhaust, Head-Up Display, black 19″ Estoril alloys, Harman Kardon sound system, adaptive cruise control and Black Performance Package that includes a drift mode as well as an increased top speed of 270 km/h.

The Golf 8 R retains its fun character, comfort and street cred as a hot hatch many will love. Soon, the stable will gain a new rival in the form of the manual-wielding Toyota Corolla GR which will be sold locally in minimal numbers.

The pricing includes a standard 3-year/120,000 km warranty, a 5-year/ 100,000 km EasyDrive Maintenance Plan and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty.
