New Lexus RX gets new face and hybridised powertrains

Based on the ‘Lexus Electrified’ electrification vision announced in 2019 by Lexus, the new RX luxury crossover SUV has finally broken cover.

Now in its 5th generation, the all-new Lexus RX has gone undergone a complete makeover compared to its forebear and follows the same maturity recipe worn by the latest products of the Japanese company. The RX features a spindle grille design that is further expressed via slim headlights and rear combination taillights with an L-shaped horizontal signature.

Saddling inside, you are greeted by a cockpit that has been designed with the ‘Tazuna’ concept in mind and, according to the carmaker, it refines the human-centred philosophy present in Lexus’ vehicle crafting.

Depending on the model, the all-new Lexus RX can be had either with a 14″ or a 9.8″ centre display. Other interior features include a multi-function steering wheel, head-up display, navigation and Audio. It’s also available in a choice of six upholstery colour choices; Macadamia, Black, Birch, Palomino, Peppercorn, and Rioja Red. The trim styles are only four; Black Cascade, Ash Bamboo, Black Open Pore, and Dark Graphite Aluminum.

Hybrid choice

The RX is expected to join the market with four powertrain variants but the local arm of the Japanese brand is yet to confirm which of them are headed to our shores.

Starting with the 450h+, it packs a 2.5-litre inline-four and a plug-in hybrid system while the 350h houses the same motor with a hybrid system that’s good for 183 kW and 315 Nm. The 350 is fitted with a 2.4-litre turbocharged inline-four engine with 205 kW and 430 Nm of torque. Sitting on top of the range is the 500h which packs a 2.4-litre turbocharged inline-four engine plus a hybrid system suitable for 273 kW and 550 Nm of torque.

The 2.5-litre PHEV and 2.4-litre turbo models are available with all-wheel-drive, and the 2.5-litre HEV is available in either AWD or front-wheel-drive drivetrain configuration.

The new Lexus LX is earmarked to go on sale in Mzansi in early 2023 and more details pertaining to specifications, pricing and availability will be shared at launch timing.
