Refreshed Mitsubishi Xpander shows its ‘SUV-inspired’ updates

Right off the heels of the recently launched Honda BR-V, which now boasts SUV styling cues, Mitsubishi’s Xpander has recently been to the surgeon’s room for a notable nip and tuck as well as SUV-focussed enhancements.

Outside, the enhanced Mitsubishi Xpander draws away from MPV styling elements for an SUV look courtesy of a new front fascia with T-shaped headlights, a new lighting signature with halogen headlamps, fog lights, and distinct LED daytime running lights.

While it may take non-die-hard fans of the product a few glances to notice the changes at the back, they are indeed there. These include upgraded LED taillights, a high-mounted stop lamp and position light.

The manual Xpander rides on upgraded 16″ alloys while the automatic variants get 17″. The change in wheel sizes has heightened the ground clearance of the model from 205 mm to 225 mm for short stints off the tarmac.

Mitsubishi also stretched the length of the new Xpander by 120 mm, which, according to the marque, translates to more interior space. There’s space for seven passengers, further complemented by ample storage points for smaller items.

For added comfort, there’s a new central rear armrest as well as an updated rear cooler.

The changes inside end there and, like the pre-facelift, occupants are still treated to a fully automatic air-conditioning with a manual rear overhead cooler, electric windows all around, a USB port in the front, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and a rear-view camera.

An unchanged 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine soldiers on with 77 kW and 141 Nm sent to the front axle either via a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. It’s safe to say that this powerplant paired with the automatic gearbox delivered adequate shove under normal driving when we tested it in the pre-facelift model in 2021.

The enhanced Mitsubishi Xpander continues to rival the likes of the Honda BR-V, Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota’s Rumion.
