As far as the initial impressions go, it means business.

BYD Shark bakkie looks set to tackle the status quo

BYD (Build Your Dreams) flaunts a unique approach to naming its vehicles. The Dolphin EV, poised to enter the local market in the upcoming months, is aptly named as its design inspiration is derived from dolphins.

Recently, BYD in Mexico unveiled its new bakkie, the Shark. As you might guess, the name is indeed a nod to its design inspiration, though we feel like its resemblance leans more towards Ford’s F-150 Lighting, but that’s entirely subjective.

In terms of mechanical details, it’s a plug-in hybrid, meaning that it will compete with other hybridised bakkies such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux GR-S mild-hybrid. Underneath, it houses a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that is paired with two electric motors for a total power output of 320kW.

The electric motors are fed power by a 29.6kWh battery pack that gives the BYD Shark bakkie a claimed EV range of 100km. In terms of performance, the Shark sprints from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds, which is rather impressive considering its relatively large size.

BYD claims the Shark will be able to travel up to 840km on the combined cycle, and recharging the battery pack from 30 to 80% will take approximately 20 minutes when using a 55kW DC fast charger.

With dimensions of 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, the Shark is marginally larger than the Hilux. Its load capacity is measured at 835kg, while its towing capacity is rated at 2,500kg.

The interior, on the other hand, isn’t short on style. It features a massive rotative 12-inch infotainment system, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and a multi-functional steering wheel, amongst others. Like the Dolphin models, the Shark can be used to power some devices, like farming or construction tools or electric grilles at a campsite.

At this stage, there isn’t any indication of the Shark making its way to Mzansi, but looking at the local bakkie market dynamics and the presence of the BYD marque in SA, it remains a possibility and one to look forward to.
