Is the Subaru STI making its epic comeback?

If you want a proper automotive controversy, look no further than Subaru dropping the STI when they launched the latest WRX. Honestly, it felt like something was missing since the WRX and STI nameplates have always gone hand in hand…

So why did Subaru separate WRX and STI? Their explanation boiled down to a few key points: tightening emissions rules, the push towards electrification, and, let’s be honest, the declining appeal of high-performance sedans. Fair points, I suppose. And yes, there was a hint that the STI might return in some electric form down the line.

Fast forward to four years later, at this year’s Japan Mobility Show, and Subaru finally revealed two STI concepts. One’s still a classic boxer AWD model, while the other’s electrified. Could this be the STI making a proper comeback? I’d say it’s looking promising.

It’s a bit tricky to catch every detail in the teaser images, but here’s what we can make out. One of the concepts resembles a proper hot hatch, featuring a massive rear wing, a low stance, and a front end that echoes the current WRX, thanks to a bonnet scoop and C-shaped LED daytime running lights. If this is indeed what it seems, we could be looking at the VW Golf R and Toyota GR Corolla rival. The surprising bit? Subaru says this petrol-powered model would still feature AWD, which is a bit of a curveball, considering they’d previously hinted the STI nameplate would return only as an EV.

On the other hand, the fully electric STI concept leans into a fastback, almost Mustang-like silhouette. It’s flanked by slim headlights, a narrow bonnet, and a sharper front bumper, while a roof-mounted spoiler gives it an extra dash of aggression.

At this point, we don’t know exactly what these concepts will evolve into, but it’s reassuring to see Subaru, still the maker of cars we hold in high regard, pushing the envelope. According to the brand, both concepts will make their full debut later this month, alongside a host of other Subaru models.
