Mercedes-AMG G63 Grand Edition introduced in SA

Despite the impending transition of Mercedes-Benz to a fully electric carmaker by 2030, the AMG G63 remains a formidable SUV. While it may not appeal to everyone, it excels in its intended purpose.

In terms of electrification, the AMG G63 will continue to exist as an electric vehicle beyond 2030. Merc recognises the importance of including this iconic nameplate in its plans. If that doesn’t define a masterpiece, I don’t know what does. And speaking of being a masterpiece, Mercedes-AMG has announced the arrival of the G63 Grand Edition variant, which is intended to celebrate the G-Class’s legacy and exceptional status as a performance off-road bruiser.

Priced at R5,474,512, the G63 Grand Edition isn’t cheap, but looking at what it brings to the table, the hefty price tag is justifiable. That said, it wears a night black exterior shade with gold-coloured details, an AMG logo, and the Mercedes 3-pointed star in a Kalahari Gold shade, as well as an Affalterbach emblem on the bonnet. The Merc star on the inlay of the spare wheel cover, the front and rear bumper inlays, and the underride protection have all been painted with the same unique colour.

It comes equipped with large 22-inch AMG forged wheels with a cross-spoke design, a matte black central locking nut, and a Mercedes star in tech gold. Those who are lucky enough to buy the allocated 20 units will also receive a customised AMG indoor cover.

The interior features a striking contrast of black and gold, including “AMG” logos on the black door sill trims, G Manufactur black Nappa leather seats with contrasting gold stitching, plaques with an AMG logo and gold edging set into the backrests, black floor mats adorned with gold stitching, and Nappa leather roof grab handles. Other features include a Dinamica microfibre AMG Performance steering wheel with a G63 emblem.

Mercedes-AMG doesn’t mention the powertrain, but the Grand Edition will likely use the same 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine with 430kW and 850Nm, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. This is encouraging news, considering that Merc continues to resist the downsizing trend in the G63.

The Mercedes-AMG G63 Grand Edition distinguishes itself with bespoke features that further extend the iconic G-Class identity on the road. Looking past its hefty price tag, it makes a strong case for itself. After all, exclusivity comes at a price.
